The Top Ten Baseball Players That Should Have Been

The Top Ten Baseball Players That Should Have Been.

There are tons of movies immersed in the world of baseball, there are a few classics that most everyone name off of the top of their head [Field of Dreams, Love of the Game, Bull Durham to name a few].  The ending of Field of Dreams always tears me up when Kevin Costner gets that catch with his dad that he had always regretted never being able to do. Let's face it though, there are characters in these movies that everyone wished actually had played on the diamond, and here are my top ten of should haves.

10. Charlie Brown

The poor boy couldn't place kick to save his life and well, his pitching wasn't much better, he always was more of a moral support for his team than an actual member. Deep down I always rooted for the poor boy.

9. Kenny Powers

The main character on HBO's Eastbound and Down, a washed out cocky former Major League pitcher who eventually couldn't find a team to play for, goes home to substitute teach in his hometown, all while trying to right his wrongs and make it back the show. Between the jet ski's and the mullets, Powers quirky attitude always reminds me of the likes of closer Brian Wilson.

8. Sam Malone

Former Relief Pitcher for The Boston Red Sox and owner of the bar Cheers. He's an all around ladies man who's a recovering alcoholic  While he only had 15 minutes of fame, he's charisma and attitude is one that would be a amazing for all to watch on the mound, and plus being an relief pitcher for the Red Sox is enough in itself.

7. Ricky Vaughn

The wildest pitcher in the entire film [his occasional strike is hit for a 400 foot homer by a Yankee in the film], and is thus dubbed "Wild One" His off field charisma and as well on-field antics make him one of the memorable characters of the film , and one that would have been a sight to see at Progressive Field.

6. Roy Hobbs

Hobbs [played by Robert Redford] is a baseball prodigy trying out for the Cubs at 19, only to be seduced and shot by a woman [whom we later find out kills rising athletes, having done it to two other ones]. Throughout the entire film we see him progress as an athlete and eventually in the end win the pennant with a magical bat forged from lightning. The film ends where it began, with a father and son playing catch.

5. Jimmy Dugan

A former cubs slugger who lost his career to alcohol, he said what we were all thinking "there's no crying in baseball." That grit and stubbornness of Dugan is one that anyone would love to watch perform at the Show

4. Ham Porter

Growing up everyone wanted to be as awesome as Ham Porter in The Sandlot, while it never happened, he cemented his legacy in growing up to be the professional Wrestler The Great Hambino, even if he never did become the next Great Bambino, he is one character that we all would love to see on and off the field.

3. Mel Clark

Pitcher Mel Clark is old and aging, Christopher Lloyd also points out that his smoking has caught up with him and that he only has sixth months to win. Admittedly though when I first watched Angels in The Outfield aside from Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character and I wanted Mel to win the pennant almost as much as I wanted Roger to have his family again.

2.  Crash Davis

While Nuke Lagoosh was the focal point of the film, Crash is the player who plays cause he loves the game, he'll go to any team that has a spot on the roster and in the end gets his minors record. I can't think of a better person in that film to see in real life, after all he just loves to play the game.

1. Billy Chapel

The Main Character in For Love of the Game the film focuses on 40 year old Billy Chapel is on the tail end of his career. The season is virtually over and not only is he about to lose the team he loves, he's about to lose his girl too. The film focuses on Billy throwing [what could be] his last game, all while flash backing to the best moments of his relationship with his girlfriend. In the end Billy ultimately gets his girl and throws a no hitter.
